How is GreekDrill more effective than standard flashcards or other flashcard software?

GreekDrill is the only software available that generates Greek words using all word endings so students can practice recognizing various word endings instead of just the lexical form!  For nouns, the software will test the student on Nominative, Genitive, Dative, and Accusative case endings, in both the Singular and Plural, using various roots.  For adjectives, the software will generate the same combinations for each Gender.  For verbs, the software will generate endings in each applicable Tense, Voice, Mood, Person, and Number combination.

Now the student can "drill" over and over again on recognizing different case and verb endings.  Using GreekDrill, the student is learning to recognize the case and verb endings at the same time as they are learning the vocabulary in a given chapter.

In this way, the student is learning to instantly recognize a noun or adjective or participle as being in the nominative case or as being in the accusative case and is training their mind to associate that word as the subject or direct object, etc.  Similarly, the student is learning to instantly recognize an Aorist Passive or a Perfect Active verb and to instantly associate that word ending with its actual meaning.

How else does GreekDrill enable sight-reading?

GreekDrill does not only test students on words but also generates grammatically correct phrases!  By practicing with phrases, the student is learning to see the grammar “jump off the page.”  Students are learning to instantly perceive, for example, an Article_Noun_Article_Noun(gen) construction, or a Article_Noun_Article_Adjective construction, and to instantly distinguish between the two.

These are the skills that are necessary to approach sight-reading the Greek Text, but until GreekDrill were so difficult to practice and were nearly impossible to practice using only known vocabulary.

Does GreekDrill support filtering?

GreekDrill has a highly sophisticated filtering combinations so students can practice only the words and concepts they have been exposed to so far.  Words can be filtered by the chapter in which they appear in various textbooks or by NT frequency.

GreekDrill can test on Nouns, Adjectives, Pronouns, Conjunctions and Adverbs or Prepositions individually within a specified chapter range.  Verb forms can be further restricted to any Tense, Voice, Mood combination desired.

For example, the student can practice [all words in chapter 10], or [only Nouns in chapters 4-10], or [only Present Active Imperatives verb forms using vocabulary from any chapter], or [only Subjunctive verb forms using vocabulary from chapters 27-31] or [only Passive Participle verb forms using words that occur 50 times or more], etc.

In the same way, if the student has not learned participles yet, the 'participles' box on the main form can simply be deselected and GreekDrill will not test on participles.  The student has electronic flash cards perfectly suited to their level of development!

And the number of flashcards will never be exhausted because GreekDrill dynamically builds each root-ending combination to create a word or phrase according to the specified filtering options.

Textbooks

GreekDrill is designed to work with any teaching method and any 1st year grammar.  The vocabulary is currently keyed by chapter to Basics of Biblical Greek 2nd Ed. by William D. Mounce.   If your school uses a different textbook, please let us know at textbooks@greekdrill.com.  In most cases, GreekDrill can be keyed to the text you use.  As you can see, this software is not meant to replace a 1st year grammar or standard program of classroom instruction, but to provide a way for students to practice what they have learned.

A Good Way to Practice

GreekDrill provides a missing element: a good way to practice efficiently.  It is our hope that, using GreekDrill, a whole generation of students, and therefore a whole generation of pastors and teachers, will have increased ability to regularly and profoundly engage with the original Biblical text.
